surrounded by massive mountains. It is considered to be the second highest peak in Honduras ranging almost 8,000 ft above sea level. The combination of vegetation and water create an impressive diverse habitat that is home to many different species of flora, fauna and over 373 species of birds. Lake Yojoa has been long attractive to its people and to the growing numbers of tourists each year. During the time span of the millennium of our era, the shores of the lake were inhabited by Native Americans who were believed to be of the Lenca culture. The colonial city of Comayagua was found December 8th, 1537. The conqueror of Yucatan, Don Francisco de Montejo, instructed his captain, Alomso de Caceres to establish a city in a place that was equal distant between both oceans and the city of Guatemala, and Leon, Nicaragua. The city itself is built according to the old Spanish tradition; a square with a central park and streets laid out in a linear grid fashion. Old home and building are silent testimony of the city's old heritage. Amongst the most impressive buildings are the Comayagua cathedral, the churches of La
Merced, La Caridad, San Francisco, San Sebastian, as well as the bishop's residence and the Museum of Anthropology, which in its time was actually the presidential home. The cathedral was inaugurated the 8th of December in 1711. It's considered to be the biggest and most beautiful of all cathedrals built in Honduras. The cathedral also holds one of the oldest antiques clock in the world, donated by King Felipe III. It's believed to have been made in Honduras in the XVI century and continues to work in perfect order for more than 400 years.
